Okay, I admit it. I’m a sucker for those memes and videos of dogs or cats dressed in costume. The cat dressed as a pirate is especially adorable. (Go on and Google it. I’ll wait.) The cats, especially, always look like they’re plotting revenge as soon as they’re free of the cumbersome outfits, don’t they?

9781101990117When I was writing Gone With the Witch, which features a pet pageant in the Enchanted Village, the magical neighborhood where Wishcrafter Darcy Merriweather lives, I knew I wanted some of those pets to sport costumes. Not all of them, however. Cookie, the Nigerian dwarf goat, would have none of it. And neither would Archie, the chatty scarlet macaw familiar, who believes his au natural plumage should always be at the top of any best dressed list. He’s an egotistical kind of bird.

At the pageant, you’ll find a bichon frise dressed as Evel Knievel; a Morkie dressed as Audrey Hepburn; and a black ragamuffin cat dressed as Cleopatra, or as her owner puts it, “Cleocatra.”

However, it’s not all fun and games at the pageant when that ragamuffin’s owner dies suddenly…and then pets start disappearing. Darcy is soon tasked with finding not only a killer but a petnapper as well, and she can’t help but wonder if it is the same person committing the crimes…

Have you ever dressed your pet in a costume? How did it turn out?
