In one undefinable moment life drastically changed for Chessa Paxton. One minute she’s enjoying “The Happily Ever After Ball” at the Lake Tahoe, Boardwalk Casino. All her plans as assistant in charge of Special Events had worked out well. The kick-off fundraiser for MASK: Making Art out of Sad Kids” was successful in drawing the financial assistance of both land developers and politicians. The menu featured delicious foods, the social setting was magical, until Chessa began to notice something was disturbing her husband, Zach.

There was no warning. It simply happened. A small group of guests was driven to a field and executed. Among those taken was Chessa. Somehow she was spared. She wakes to find her husband and everyone else around her dead. She knows she isn’t the killer and flees to avoid arrest.

The majority of this action-packed thriller is Chessa struggling to survive, to keep a step ahead of the individual who may be the actual killer and away from Marcus and Tallchief who are investigating the gruesome case.

Her support system is questionable as anyone of those she trusts could be involved in this unexplainable killing. She suspects that her husband was involved and the list grows longer each day. Woven into the mystery are possible persons of interest: her stepfather, a preacher, a marina owner,  gamblers, technology trend setters, a director of Business and Industry, a security guard, and a construction worker.

I found “Girl on the Run” to have non-stop action. I was amazed that the author could figure out so many different ways to not only keep Chessa alive with this animal following her and his boss giving orders, but how Chessa could unravel the truth with intuition and intelligence. I think the book could easily transition into a movie. It was well written in terms of description, pacing, and the emotional impact of most of the characters concerned. The true meaning for why everything happened is revealed…but slowly, as it should be. I would have liked to have learned more about Chessa’s husband, father and stepfather. Hoped to see a possible relationship with Chessa and the man she seeks to help her.
