Glitter Bomb wastes no time in delivering a King Neptune-sized explosion. Make that implosion, during the “Spirits of the Sea” Mardi Gras parade. Carmela Bertrand, a scrapbook shop owner, who is an amateur sleuth, is at the scene with her friend Ava Gruiex when the float implodes and Hughes Wilder, the krewe captain and CEO of Pontchantrain Capital Management — a local hedge fund– is killed allegedly by a pipe bomb with plastic exposures.
With Carmela’s ex, Shamus, surviving the destroyed float and involved in investing in PCM’s hedge fund, (a 16 million door investment of bank money, which bit the dust) he is a high order suspect. But there are other suspects. Danny Labat is the owner of an expensive car dealership who is having an affair with Wilder’s wife. One wonders if he detonated the bomb that killed Wilder. Any of the investors who lost a great deal of money could have ended Wilder’s life.
In an effort to save his own reputation, Carmela’s ex-husband asks her to solve the case basically so he doesn’t get arrested. To get him off her back, she begins her investigation hiding the fact from her future husband, Detective Edgar Babcock. She speaks with everyone she can think of connected with both the accident and who may have wanted Wilder dead.
This one even fooled me. I love following along with the protagonist trying to figure out who the killer is, but this person was off my radar. Still, I love Carmela’s intuitive nature, her friend Ava’s personality, the sheer gall of some people to do the unacceptable and unthinkable. The storyline kept me interested, predictable in some areas, but not the end.
