Lately I’ve been thinking about cozy mysteries. Really, I’m always thinking about mysteries, because I love them so much! But now, more than ever, I’ve realized that cozies matter.
The traditional amateur sleuth mystery is nearly always set in an identifiable community, most often a small town or a neighborhood within a city. A crime happens to upset the balance of the community—a theft, or very often a murder which touches our main character in some way. Our sleuth—just a regular girl or guy like us—begins an investigation. She sees a wrong that needs righting, and she does what it takes, even putting herself in danger, to make sure the perpetrator is held accountable for his/her actions.
And don’t we all want to be that sleuth? That person who, even though she may be afraid or out of her element, stands up for what’s right? She doesn’t just talk; she takes action. Our amateur sleuth is more than just a fictional character. She represents the best in all of us—and we get a little better with every story that gets into our brains.
The crazier things get in the real world around us, the more we need cozies. These books may have cute covers and clever titles—but there’s a message and a promise in every one: justice will prevail, every single time. We can count on it. That’s why I’ll keep writing them. And I hope you’ll keep reading them!
