Since graduating from college, Carter Hayes had been determined to work his way up the ladder. His professional goal is owning an architecture firm. That means working day and night and staying clear of relationships.
When his sister, Rebecca, got in a car accident, he returned to Heart’s Hope Bay to care for his 3-year-old niece. He didn’t trust their father to take on the responsibility.
Abby Engel owns Sunshine Corner, a successful daycare center in the home she and her grandmother share. Now, if only she could find a loving husband and raise the family she always dreamt of.
Both Abby and Carter start thinking that something keeps on putting them together as they run into each other at the daycare center and stores. If that isn’t enough, Carter’s sister invites Abby over for dinner. Yes, she has an agenda. She wants them to get married. Rebecca also suggests Carter help Abby with the renovations of the daycare center so she can make it a preschool. After dinner at Becca’s home, and attending a get together with friends, Carter starts to realize how much he loves Abby.
After Carter’s niece talks about Abby leaving a bag in their home, their friends figure out they are sleeping together and they feel it’s not going to end well.
Becca is also concerned about their father. She hasn’t been able to get a hold of him in days. Fearing the worst, Becca has Carter go over there to check on him. Because they don’t have a good relationship, it can only lead to an argument. Not only is their father’s home a mess, but he tells Carter that at least he stuck around when life got tough. Carter moved away and left his father and sister to get through life’s difficulties on their own.
Carter begins to wonder if going back to Las Vegas is the right thing to do. That would mean leaving his family and Abby again. Can he give up his goal of owning his own business and marry Abby or is he too goal centered? Read the book and find out.
What I loved about The House on Sunshine Corner is how Abby and her grandmother are like mother and daughter. How they look out for each other. How Abby wants a family and a career. That the families appreciate all the daycare center offers. How Carter’s sister would love to see her brother and Abby married and with a family of their own. How Abby’s friends work with her and support her. I felt bad that Carter missed out on his sister and niece’s life. That he could have experienced love years ago.
